The Fearsome Five The Fearsome Five (pop culture)When the villainous Dr. Light placed an ad in “The Underworld Star,” a newspaper read mostly by the evildoers of the DC Comics' Universe, he wanted to put together a group of supervillains. Those that joined him were known as the Fearsome Five, and they soon became the often-defeated bane of the Teen Titans and Superman. First appearing in a story by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez in The New Teen Titans #3 (1981), the original Fearsome Five membership included Dr. Light, Psimon, Shimmer and her brother Mammoth, and Gizmo. Dr. Light was a scientist named Arthur Light who had gained his lightcontrolling powers in a scientific accident, and who used them for evil while dressed in a black and white costume replete with cape and finned skullcap. After confrontations with an earlier group of Teen Titans and the Justice League of America, Light had his mind altered by the sorceress Zatanna, and became an ineffectual buffoon the more he tried to be a credible villain. Psimon was physicist Simon Jones whose experiments led to him gaining almost unlimited psionic powers; he dressed in a brain-exposing cranial dome and magenta robes. Shimmer was Selinda Flinders, an Australian with the power to transmute matter for three minutes; she wore a gold bodysuit with strategically placed cut-outs exposing her skin. Mammoth was her brother Baran, who wore a black bodysuit with yellow boots, gloves, and a harness, and who wielded superstrength. Gizmo was a brilliant midget named Mikron O'Jeneus, who had the power to convert almost any object into a technological weapon; he wore a green militaryesque outfit with a hood, and was often bristling with weaponry and a flying backpack. After run-ins with the Titans, Dr. Light was forced out of the group by Psimon, and the Fearsome Five welcomed East Indian sorceress Jinx into their fold. Later, Superman villain Neutron— whose radioactive punches were as strong as a bomb—also joined the Five. Later still, after the apparent death of Psimon, the Five faced Superman as Mammoth, Gizmo, Shimmer, and new members Charger (who had electrical powers) and Deuce (a low level psychic who could make people believe she was in more than one place at a time). Psimon was not dead, however, and he eventually tried to kill his ex-teammates, with Shimmer seeming to perish. Later, Dr. Sivana revived the group again, keeping Psimon, a resurrected Shimmer, Mammoth, Jinx, and Gizmo together … until Sivana killed Gizmo. History shows that the biggest impediment to the Fearsome Five's success is their own behavior toward each other. In Cartoon Network's Teen Titans cartoon (2003–2006), members of the Fearsome Five have appeared regularly, though not as a team. Dr. Light has operated alone, while Gizmo, Jinx, and Mammoth are villainous teenage graduates of the HIVE Academy. Action figures of the animated villains began appearing in 2004 from Bandai, while Dr. Light became an action figure from DC Direct in 2005. |
