Sokolov, Boris Sergeevich

Born Mar. 27 (Apr. 9), 1914, in Vyshnii Volochek, in what is now Kalinin Oblast. Soviet geologist and paleontologist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1968; corresponding member, 1958).

Sokolov graduated from Leningrad University in 1937 and subsequently taught there from 1937 to 1941 and from 1945 to 1958. He joined the faculty of the University of Novosibirsk in 1960, becoming a professor there in 1964. In 1958 he started working at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

Sokolov’s principal works deal with Paleozoic corals, Protero-zoic and Cambrian organisms, the history of the development of the organic world during the Precambrian, and the biostratigra-phy and paleogeography of the territory of the USSR during the first half of the Paleozoic. Sokolov identified the Wend complex.

Sokolov is an academician-secretary of the geology, geophysics, and geochemistry section of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1975 he became a member of the academy’s Presidium. He became president of the All-Union Paleontological Society of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1974 and vice-president of the International Paleontological Union in 1972. He has been an honorary member of the Geological Society of Sweden since 1968 and a member of the Geological Society of France since 1963. Sokolov received the Lenin Prize in 1967. He has been awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals.
