track-while-scan track-while-scan[¦trak ‚wīl ′skan] (electronics) Electronic system used to detect a radar target, compute its velocity, and predict its future position without interfering with continuous radar scanning. track-while-scan The ability of radar to track a target while searching for other targets. This is done by having two unidirectional sector scans scanning simultaneously in two planes. One of these is usually vertical and the other horizontal. This allows targets common to both to be accurately tracked in azimuth and elevation, as well as in range. The targets that do not appear on both scans can be “in search” mode. This way the target is not alerted that it is being tracked. |
