T0050900 (tăr′ē-toun′) A village of southeast New York on the Hudson River north of New York City. Founded by the Dutch in the 1600s, it was the home of Washington Irving and the setting for many of his short stories.

(târ`ētoun), village (1990 pop. 10,739), Westchester co., SE N.Y., a residential suburb of New York City, on the E bank of the Hudson opposite Nyack; settled in the 17th cent. by the Dutch, inc. 1870. It has several corporate headquarters, and its industries include food processing and the manufacture of laboratory instruments and heating equipment. Tarrytown is the eastern terminus of the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. Of interest are Sunnyside, the home of Washington IrvingIrving, Washington,
1783–1859, American author and diplomat, b. New York City. Irving was one of the first Americans to be recognized abroad as a man of letters, and he was a literary idol at home.
