a city in southeastern Canada, in Ontario; situated on the Welland Ship Canal. Population, 110,000 (1971). The agglomeration of St. Catharines and the city of Niagara Falls has a population of 303,000. Industries include the production of transportation equipment and chemicals, machine building, ferrous metallurgy, and the pulp-and-paper industry. The city has a university. St. Catharines was founded in 1790.
