Azerbaijan Institute of Petroleum and Chemistry

(full name, M. Azizbekov Azerbaijan Institute of Petroleum and Chemistry). The institute trains engineers in oil extraction, oil refining, and the petrochemical industry. Founded in 1920 as the Baku (Azerbaijan since 1928) Polytechnical Institute and renamed the Petroleum Institute in 1930; it was called an industrial institute between 1934 and 1959 and assumed its present name in 1959. In 1969 the institute had seven departments: geologic prospecting, oil extraction, chemistry and technology, petroleum industry machines, power engineering, the automation of production processes, and engineering and economics. It also has a graduate school, 55 subdepart-ments, 14 scientific research and special-problem laboratories, four branch laboratories, and libraries with about 100,000 volumes. With a plant located in Sumgait, the higher technical educational institution is a branch of the institute. In 1968 the institute had about 15,500 students and 360 graduate students in the regular, evening, and correspondence divisions and about 900 instructors, including 40 professors and doctors of science and 277 docents and candidates of science. Such prominent scientists as I. V. Kurchatov (physics), L. S. Leibenzon (hydraulics), and K. A. Krasusskii (chemistry) have worked and taught at the institute. The institute confers candidate’s and doctor’s degrees in geology, mineralogy, technical sciences, and chemistry. The institute’s publications include the all-Union monthly scientific and technical journal Izvestiia vuzov with a section Neft’ i gaz (Petroleum and Gas), since 1958.

The institute was awarded the Republic Order of the Red Banner of Labor in 1930 and the Union Order of the Red Banner of Labor in 1940.
