SaimiriSaimiri(formerly Chrysothrix), a genus of platyrrhine monkeys of the subfamily Cebinae. Body length, 25–37 cm; tail length, 36—46 cm. The head is black, and there are white rings around the eyes. The genus has two species: the common squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus, which is distributed in South America north of the equator, and the red-backed squirrel monkey (S. oerstedii), which is native to Central America. Squirrel monkeys live in tropical forests in large troops (up to 100 individuals). They are extremely agile. Their diet consists of fruits, nuts, buds, insects, spiders, snails, frogs, and small birds. Squirrel monkeys in captivity can be easily tamed. Saimiri
