Tarki Shamkhalate

Tarki Shamkhalate

a feudal domain in northeastern Dagestan, centered at Tarki. The Tarki Shamkhalate was formed in the late 15th century on lands inhabited by the Kumyks. The population was primarily engaged in agriculture. Beginning in the first half of the 17th century, the shamkhalate was frequently in vassalage to Russia. By the early 18th century, as a result of wars with Georgia, the Kabardinian princes, and Russia, the shamkhalate was reduced to a small domain on the Caspian Sea. The final unification of the Tarki Shamkhalate and other territories of Dagestan with Russia was concluded by the Gulistan Peace Treaty of 1813. In 1867, the Temir-Khan-Shura Okrug was formed on the territory of the former Tarki Shamkhalate.
