Tarki
an urban-type settlement in the Dagestan ASSR, under the jurisdiction of the Sovetskii district soviet of the city of Makhachkala. Situated 3 km from the Makhachkala railroad station. The settlement produces clothing.
Tarki arose in the Kumyk lands on the trade route from the Volga Region to Transcaucasia and Iran. Tamerlane traveled through Tarki in 1396. From the late 15th to early 19th centuries, Tarki was the capital of the Tarki shamkhalate and was attacked on several occasions. In 1668 it was occupied by S. Razin. In 1821 the Russian fortress of Burnaia was built on the site of the city. In 1844 the fortification of Petrovskoe (the present-day city of Makhachkala) was established near Tarki.
