More specially, a supranational organization is different from a superstate or a federation. While it is bigger than a nation, the supranational organization is limited in the functions for which it is responsible. Its first legal appearance was in the EUROPEAN COAL AND STEEL COMMUNITY (ECSC) Treaty in which the high authority was that Community, the precursor of the commission. The treaty obliged the members to refrain from action incompatible with the supranational character of their duties. The Member States were enjoined to respect this supranational character.SupranationalenUK
SupranationalDescribing an organization that exists in multiple countries. While, theoretically, supranational could refer to multinational corporations, the term most often describes an international government or quasi-government organization. Examples include the United Nations and the International Monetary Fund. Supranational organizations often have a direct role in regulation. For example, an international treaty may set up certain standards for international trade. It is important to note, however, that enforcement of these provisions is left to individual, sovereign governments.supranationalenUK Related to supranational: Supranational OrganizationsWords related to supranationaladj transcending established national boundaries or spheres of interestRelated Words |
