Statute of Sviatoslav OlGovich of 1137

Statute of Sviatoslav Ol’Govich of 1137

a statute governing the procedures for the collection of a tenth part, or tithe, from the income of the prince for the use of the Novgorod eparchy. The Kievan church statute and the local tradition of tithe collection in Novgorod were taken into account in writing the statute, which was promulgated during a period of intensification in the struggle of the people of Novgorod against the prince; Bishop Nifont played a leading role in the struggle. In the 13th century an amendment to the statute was made concerning the tithe to be paid on income from the lands in the Ladoga and Volga regions that were part of the Novgorod feudal republic.
