Viktor Struchkov

Struchkov, Viktor Ivanovich

Born July 30 (Aug. 12), 1907, in the city of Riazhsk. Soviet surgeon. Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1965); Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1963). Member of the CPSU since 1942.

Struchkov graduated from the Second Moscow Medical Institute in 1931. He served as chief surgeon in the Thirteenth Army during the Great Patriotic War (1941–45). In 1953 he became chairman of the subdepartment of general surgery at the First Moscow Medical Institute and from 1949 to 1965 served as chief surgeon of the Ministry of Public Health of the USSR. In 1965 he became editor of the journal Grudnaia khirurgiia (Thoracic Surgery) and in 1966 chief learned secretary of the Presidium of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR.

Struchkov’s principal works deal with general surgery, lung surgery, surgery for suppurative conditions, traumatology, blood transfusion, anesthesiology, and clinical enzymology. Struchkov developed and introduced into practice radical surgical techniques for suppurative conditions and lung cancer, for which he was awarded the Lenin Prize in 1961. He was also awarded the S. I. Spasokukotskii Prize of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR in 1965 for the monograph Pulmonary Tumors and the State Prize of the USSR in 1975 for the textbook General Surgery.

Struchkov has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, six other orders, and various medals.
