Typographic Measurement
Typographic Measurement
a system for measuring the elements of printing plates, such as type and spacing materials. The basis of typographic measurement is the point, which is equal to 1/72 inch; larger elements are measured in quads, which are equal to 48 points. The French inch (27.1 mm) has been adopted in the USSR and most European countries; the English inch (25.4 mm) is used in the USA and Great Britain. The correlation between typographic and metric units is as follows; 1 point = 0.376 mm; 1 quad = 18.041 mm.
