shadow mask n (Electronics) television a perforated metal sheet mounted close to the phosphor-dotted screen in some colour television tubes. The holes are positioned so that each of the three electron beams strikes the correct phosphor dot producing the required colour mixture in the image shadow mask
shadow mask[′shad·ō ‚mask] (electronics) A thin, perforated metal mask mounted just back of the phosphor-dot faceplate in a three-gun color picture tube; the holes in the mask are positioned to ensure that each of the three electron beams strikes only its intended color phosphor dot. Also known as aperture mask. shadow maskA thin screen full of holes that adheres to the back of a color CRT's viewing glass. The electron beam is aimed through the holes in the mask onto the phosphor dots. There are generally more holes per inch than the maximum resolution obtainable from that monitor. See slot mask.
