Sagaitsy

Sagaitsy

a group of the Khakass people; together with Russians, they inhabit Askiz and Tashtyp raions, Khakass Autonomous Oblast.

Before the October Revolution of 1917, the Sagaitsy—known as the Sagai “clan”—were part of the Sagai Steppe Duma, whose center was in the village of Askiz. In the 19th and early 20th centuries the majority of the Sagai Steppe Duma was made up of Bel’tirs and of Shortsy, who had migrated into the Abakan River basin from the region of the Mras-Su and Kon-doma rivers in the 18th century. The main occupations of the Sagaitsy are land cultivation and animal husbandry.
