Elongated patches or mottled patterns of light and shadow that have irregular form and movement and are briefly observed to cross rapidly over light surfaces on the Earth just before and after totality in a solar eclipse. They probably result from irregular refraction, in the Earth's atmosphere, of light from the crescent Sun.
