Timon Riabushkin
Riabushkin, Timon Vasil’evich
Born Dec. 30, 1914 (Jan. 12, 1915), in Voronezh. Soviet economist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1966). Member of the CPSU since 1942.
Riabushkin graduated from the Institute of National Economic Accounting in Voronezh in 1936. Between 1948 and 1953 he was first deputy head and then head of the department of statistical methodology of the Central Statistical Board of the USSR; he was also editor in chief at the State Statistical Publishing House. From 1954 to 1961 he was head of the section of economic statistics of the Institute of Economics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. From 1961 to 1970 he served as head of the statistics section and deputy director of the Institute of the Economics of the World Socialist System of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1970 he became head of the department of demography and statistics at the Central Institute of Economics and Mathematics. From 1948 to 1961, Riabushkin was the Soviet representative to the Statistical and Population commissions of the United Nations. He became a member of the International Statistical Institute in 1958; he served as vice-president from 1961 to 1965 and began a new term in 1973.
Riabushkin’s chief works are on political economy and statistics. They treat issues of national economic balance, statistical methods and analyzing proportions in the national economy and the interrelations of economic elements, methods of comparing statistical data on an international level, and the regularities in the development of the world socialist economy. Riabushkin edited the book V. I. Lenin and Modern Statistics (vols. 1–3, 1970–73). He has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
