Prokhor of Gorodets

Prokhor of Gorodets

Dates of birth and death unknown. Russian painter.

In 1405, Prokhor of Gorodets, together with Theophanes the Greek and Andrei Rublev, frescoed Blagoveshchenskii Cathedral (built in the 14th century; rebuilt in 1416; not preserved) in the Moscow Kremlin. A number of icons in the festivals register of the cathedral’s iconostasis are attributed to Prokhor of Gorodets. The icons depict the Crucifixion, the Ascension, and the Assumption; they are now in the new Blagoveshchenskii Cathedral (1484–89).
