Refractometer
refractometer[‚rē‚frak′täm·əd·ər] (engineering) An instrument used to measure the index of refraction of a substance in any one of several ways, such as measurement of the refraction produced by a prism, measurement of the critical angle, observation of an interference pattern produced by passing light through the substance, and measurement of the substance's dielectric constant. Refractometer an instrument for measuring the refractive index of a substance. There exist types for solids, liquids, and gases. A distinction is made between laboratory and industrial refractometers. The principles of the operation of laboratory refractometers are discussed in the article REFRACTOMETRY. Such refractometers are used for analyses where the refractive index and the dispersion (the dependence of the refractive index on the wavelength of the radiation) of a substance are measured on a noncontinuous basis. Industrial refractometers are designed to record the dynamics of processes continuously and automatically. Refractometers can be incorporated into automatic process control systems. refractometer
refractometer [re″frak-tom´ĕ-ter] 1. an instrument for measuring the refractive power of the eye.2. an instrument for determining the indexes of refraction of various substances, particularly for determining the strength of lenses for spectacles.re·frac·tom·e·ter (rē'frak-tom'ĕ-ter), An instrument for measuring the degree of refraction in translucent substances, especially the ocular media. See: refractive index. Synonym(s): objective optometer, refractionometer [refraction + G. metron, measure] re·frac·tom·e·ter (rē'frak-tom'ĕ-tĕr) An instrument for measuring the degree of refraction in translucent substances, especially the ocular media. See also: refractive index[refraction + G. metron, measure]refractometer 1. An instrument for measuring the refractive index of transparent objects. There exist several types: Abbé's refrac-tometer, which is based on the measurement of the critical angle at the interface between a sample and a prism of known index of refraction and uses white light whereas that of Pulfrich, which is based on the same principle as Abbé's, uses monochromatic light. As the refractive index of some materials is related to their water content, the handheld Atago CL-1 Soft lens Refractometer has been calibrated to provide a reading of the percentage of water content of soft contact lenses. 2. See optometer.refractometer
