Persei

 

the first Soviet expeditionary ship, a two-masted wooden schooner designed for navigation through ice. Built in Arkhangel’sk in 1922, it had a displacement of 550 tons. It was equipped for comprehensive oceanographic research and had seven scientific laboratories. Research on the Persei was conducted first by the Floating Marine Scientific Institute, then by the State Oceanographic Institute, and from 1933 by the All-Union Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography. Between 1923 and 1941 the ship made 84 voyages to the White, Barents, Kara and other northern seas and completed 5,525 oceanographic assignments. In 1941 fascist German aircraft bombed and sank the Persei in the Kola Gulf.
