It originates in the spurs of the Serra da Algarve and empties into the Bay of Setúbal in the Atlantic Ocean, forming an estuary, which is separated from the bay by a sandbar. The Sado is fed by rain; the water level is highest in the winter. The mean flow rate is approximately 40 cu m per sec. The lower Sado is navigable at high tide.
