tracheitis

Inflammation of the lining of the windpipe (trachea), usually from infections originating in the throat or BRONCHI. There is pain, made worse by coughing, hoarseness and wheezing. In young children breathing is noisy and crowing (CROUP) and in very small children there may be a risk of asphyxia. Treatment depends on the cause and may include antibiotics, soothing inhalations and drugs to control coughing.
