Vaca Muerta meteorite

(vah -kah mwair -tah) A rare stony-iron (mesosiderite) meteorite, many kilograms of which were found in 1861 over an area of 12 × 2 km in the Atacama Desert in Chile. The dark meteorites were easy to spot against the pale sand of the desert. About 4 tonnes out of an estimated initial mass of 6 tonnes have now been recovered. The fall probably occurred about 3000 years ago.
