n. 1. the quality or state of being permeable. 2. Physics. a. the rate at which a pressurized gas or liquid passes through a porous medium. b. the ability of a medium to permit such flow. 3. a measure of the ability of a material to alter the magnetic field in the area that it occupies. 4. the capability of a porous rock or sediment to permit the flow of fluids through its pore spaces. Permeability

permeability

[‚pər·mē·ə′bil·əd·ē] (electromagnetism) A factor, characteristic of a material, that is proportional to the magnetic induction produced in a material divided by the magnetic field strength; it is a tensor when these quantities are not parallel. Also known as magnetic permeability. (fluid mechanics) The ability of a membrane or other material to permit a substance to pass through it. Quantitatively, the amount of substance which passes through the material under given conditions. (geology) The capacity of a porous rock, soil, or sediment for transmitting a fluid without damage to the structure of the medium. Also known as conductivity; perviousness. (naval architecture) The percentage of a given space in a ship that can be occupied by water.

Permeability

A measure of the ability of a material, such as rock or soil, to transmit fluids or air through it.

permeability

1. The property of a porous material which permits the passage of water vapor through it. Also See permeance. 2. The property of soil, rock, or mantle which permits water to flow through it.

permeability

The measure of a material's ability to transmit liquids. The passage of soil contaminants into groundwater increases as soil permeability increases. On the other hand,in situ remediation—removal or decomposition—of groundwater contamination is easier as permeability increases. For a color map of the United States showing the relative permeability of soils across the country, see the Web site page of the Environmental Protection Agency at www.epa.gov/iwi/1999sept/iv20_usmap.html.
