A viscous, gel-like material used in ophthalmic surgery to protect the important inner lining of the cornea and maintain the front chamber of the opened eye. The drug is also used OSTEOARTHRITIS as a replacement for synovial fluid and to treat some forms of cystitis. Brand names are Cystistat, Ophthalin, Orthovisc, Supartz and Suplasyn.
