Urkan

 

the name of two rivers in Amur Oblast, RSFSR.

(1) A left tributary of the Zeia. The river measures 234 km in length and drains an area of 3,740 sq km. It originates in the Dzhagdy Range and flows through the Verkhniaia Zeia Plain. It is fed mostly by rain. The mean flow rate 19 km from the mouth is approximately 21 cu m per sec. The lower course is in the backwater from the Zeia Hydroelectric Power Plant.

(2) A right tributary of the Zeia. The river measures 304 km in length and drains an area of 16,200 sq km. It is formed by the confluence of the Bol’shoi Urkan and Malyi Urkan rivers and flows along the Amur-Zeia Plateau. It is fed mainly by rain. The mean flow rate 34 km from the mouth is 103 cu m per sec.
