Perkins, Charles E.

Perkins, Charles E. (Elliott)

(1840–1907) railroad executive; born in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1859, at the advice of his cousin, John Murray Forbes, he clerked for the Burlington & Missouri Railroad, working his way up to superintendent by 1865. He became vice-president of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy in 1876. The two railroads consolidated in 1880 and he became president in 1881. When he resigned in 1901 the financially sound system comprised over 7,000 miles of track.
