The core training in surgery in the UK, which takes from 2.5-3 years and involves 6 months of training in each of a variety of surgical specialties—cardiothoracic surgery, general surgery, neurosurgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, otolaryngology (ENT surgery), paediatric surgery, plastic surgery, trauma and orthopaedic surgery, urology—occasionally including intensive care and accident and emergency medicine.
