Under, Marie

(pen name of Marie Adson). Born Mar. 15 (27), 1883, in Tallinn. Estonian poet who emigrated to Sweden in 1944.

Under first published her works in 1917. Her collections A Voice From the Shadow (1927), Joy From a Beautiful Day (1928), and A Stone off the Heart (1935) reveal the most important aspects of her poetry: humanism and a dialectical sense of happiness and sorrow. Her poetry written in emigration, for example, the collections Sparks in the Ashes (1954) and On the Borderline (1963). expresses loneliness and a longing for her homeland.
