Sabur Mambeev
Mambeev, Sabur Abdrasulovich
Born May 1, 1928, in the village of Abai-Bazar, present-day village of Abai, Chardara Raion, Chimkent Oblast. Soviet painter; Honored Art Worker of the Kazakh SSR (1963). Member of the CPSU since 1962.
Mambeev studied with M. I. Avilov at the I. E. Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture in Leningrad (1947-53). His genre compositions (In the Mountains, 1956-57, Museum of Art of the Eastern Peoples in Moscow; In My City, 1960, T. G. Shevchenko Kazakhstan Art Gallery in Alma-Ata) and his portraits (Girl in Black, 1964, in the same gallery) are subtly lyrical and characterized by soft harmonies of luminous areas of color. Mambeev has been chairman of the Artists’ Union of the Kazakh SSR since 1968; he also held that post from 1956 to 1962. He has been awarded two orders.
