Sablianitsa

Sablianitsa

a Russian silver coin minted in the reigns of Ivan III (1462–1505) and Vasilii III (1505–33). The name sablianitsa was derived from the figure shown on the obverse side of the coin, a horseman bearing a saber (sablia).

Two hundred sixty sablianitsy were minted from one silver grivna, which weighed approximately 204 g. When Russia adopted a unified monetary system (the reform of 1534), 600 sablianitsy were minted from one silver grivna; at the same time, however, the sablianitsa was renamed the den’ga moskovskaia or den’ga.
