sociology of sport

sociology of sport

a subdiscipline of sociology which focuses upon the relationship between SPORT and society. The sociology of sport is concerned with the relationship between sport and other social institutions (the family, education, politics, and the economy), the social organization, social relations and group behaviour associated with different types of sport (e.g. élite or mass, amateur and professional, the class, gender or race relations that sport involves), and the social processes (such as ideological incorporation) that occur in conjunction with sport. Whilst once isolated from mainstream sociology, in recent years it has become more fully integrated. Most research has been conducted in North America, but a sociology of sport also exists in Eastern and Western Europe, in Australia and New Zealand and the UK, as well as in Japan. Leading exponents in the UK have included Norbert ELIAS and Eric Dunning (see Elias and Dunning, 1986), and John Hargreaves (1986). See also LEISURE, POPULAR CULTURE, FANZINES.
