Tyndall Effectthe scattering of light that occurs when a light beam passes through an optically inhomogeneous medium. The Tyndall effect is usually observed as a luminous cone, which is called a Tyndall cone and is visible against a dark background. The effect is characteristic of colloidal systems, such as metalsols, thin latices, and tobacco smoke. The particles and dispersion medium in these systems have different refractive indexes. The Tyndall effect forms the basis for a number of optical techniques for determining the size, shape, and concentration of colloidal particles and macromolecules (see, for example, NEPHELOMETRY). The effect is named after its discoverer, J. Tyndall.
