Society of the Seasons

Society of the Seasons

(La Société des Saisons), a secret revolutionary organization that existed in Paris from 1837 to 1839. It was founded by A. Blanqui, A. Barbès, and M. Bernard in order to overthrow the July monarchy and establish a republic. It advocated more consistently egalitarian-revolutionary ideas than the secret societies of the early 1830’s. A highly secret organization, the society numbered more than 1,000 members in 1839, primarily industrial workers and artisans. Its conspiratorial (Blanquist) tactics led to the society’s utter defeat after the uprising of May 12–13, 1839.
