Uznadze, Dmitrii Nikolaevich
Born Dec. 20, 1886 (Jan. 1, 1887), in the village of Sakar, in what is now Zestafoni Raion, Georgian SSR; died Oct. 12, 1950, in Tbilisi. Soviet psychologist and philosopher. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Georgian SSR (1941).
Uznadze graduated from the faculty of philosophy of the University of Leipzig in 1909 and from the faculty of history and philology of the University of Kharkov in 1913. Uznadze was one of the founders of the University of Tbilisi (1918), where he established the division of psychology and the subdepartment of psychology with an attached laboratory for experimental psychology. He became director of the Institute of Psychology of the Academy of Sciences of the Georgian SSR at its founding in 1941. Uznadze’s principal works dealt with the psychology of thought, speech, and perception. The original theory of attitude formulated by Uznadze and the extensive research he and his students conducted in connection with that theory led to the formation of a school of psychology in the Soviet Union.
Uznadze was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
