Uzlovaia

a city (since 1938) under oblast jurisdiction and administrative center of Uzlovaia Raion, Tula Oblast, RSFSR. Railroad junction of lines to Ozherel’e, Tula, Elets, and Riazhsk. Highway junction 51 km southeast of Tula. Population, 64,000 (1975; 18,000 in 1939). Uzlovaia has enterprises servicing railroad transport. Coal is mined in the area (Moscow Coal Basin). The city also has a machine-building plant, plants for the production of plastics and leather products, clothing and footwear factories, and a factory for the production of keyboard instruments. There are also food-processing enterprises. Educational institutions include a technicum for heavy machine building, a railroad transportation technicum, and a medical school.
