Red Lithuanian Cattle

a dairy breed of cattle. It was developed at the turn of the 20th century in what is now the Lithuanian SSR by selection, breeding, and careful raising of local cattle and by crossing these cattle with cultivated breeds including Ayrshire, Angeln, Dutch, Red Danish, Schwyz, and Shorthorn cattle. The appearance of the majority of animals of this breed is typical of dairy cattle. The color is red. The weight of bulls registered in state pedigree books is about 750 kg; registered cows weigh approximately 500 kg. Cows yield 3,500 kg of milk per year (the highest producers yield 7,000-9,000 kg). The fat content of the milk is 3.7-3.9 percent. Red Lithuanian cattle are raised in the northern and eastern regions of Lithuanian SSSR.
