Redia
redia[′rē·dē·ə] (invertebrate zoology) A larva produced within the miracidial sporocyst of certain digenetic trematodes which may give rise to daughter rediae or to cercariae. Redia one of the parthenogenetic generations of the digenetic flukes, or trematodes, which parasitizes an intermediate host (mollusks). The redia develops in the body cavity of the worm’s first parthenogenetic generation, the sporocyst. It in turn produces the cercaria, the larvae of the sexually mature flukes. Unlike the sporocyst, the redia has a mouth opening, a pharynx, an intestine, and a birth pore. redia
redia [re´de-ah] (L.) a larval stage of certain trematode parasites, which develops in the body of a snail host and gives rise to daughter rediae, or to the cercariae.re·di·a, pl. re·di·ae (rē'dē-ă, -dē-ē), Intramolluscan development stage of a digenetic trematode, following the primary sporocyst stage, which forms after penetration of the snail tissues by the miracidium. Rediae are produced from cells within the sporocyst, are liberated from the latter, and develop in the tissues of the host snail as elongated, saclike, muscular organisms with a mouth and gut. The rediae may produce one or a number of additional generations in the snail, but they ultimately produce the final development stage, the cercaria. See also: sporocyst (1), miracidium. [F. Redi, Italian physician, 1626-1697] redia (rē′dē-ə)n. pl. re·diae (-dē-ē′) A larva of certain trematodes that is produced within the sporocyst and that can give rise to additional rediae or to cercariae.redia a larval stage of liver fluke which develops from the sporocyst larva.
