Red Banners Rebellion

Red Banners Rebellion

Sorkh Alam Rebellion (from the Persian-Arabic sorkh alam—red banner), a peasant rebellion in Gorgan (Iran) in 778–779, directed chiefly against the Abba-sids and their tax policy. The rebellion was ostensibly inspired by Khurramite religious doctrines and had social equality and communal land ownership as its goals. The Red Banner rebellion was probably the first rebellion in history during which the red banner served as an emblem of a people’s revolt against its oppressors.
