Undercoat

undercoat

[′ən·dər‚kōt] (materials) undercoater undercoating

Undercoat

A coat of paint applied on new wood or over a primer or over a previous coat of paint; improves the seal and serves as a base for the top coat, for which it provides better adhesion.

Undercoat

in most mammals, the lower layer of the hairy covering. Made up of soft, fine, twisted hairs, the undercoat fulfills the primary heat-insulating function of the coat. In some animals, for example, Merino sheep, such fine hairs form the entire hairy covering; in others, such as the musk deer, there is practically no undercoat. Aquatic animals and animals adapted to a cold climate have thick undercoats. In wool-bearing animals the underfleece is more valuable than the outer fleece.

undercoat

1. A coat of paint applied on new wood, or over a primer, or over a previous coat of paint; improves the seal and serves as a base for the topcoat, for which it provides better adhesion. 2. Any paint which acts as a base for enamel. 3. Any primer which is colored.
