R-value

R-val·ue

(är′văl′yo͞o)n. A measure of the capacity of a material, such as insulation, to impede heat flow, with increasing values indicating a greater capacity. Also called R-factor.
[r(esistance) value.]

R-val•ue

(ˈɑrˌvæl yu)

n. a measure of the resistance of an insulating or building material to heat flow, expressed as R-11, R-20, and so on; the higher the number, the greater the resistance to heat flow. Compare U-value. [1945–50; R, symbol for resistance]

R-value

R-value

[′är ‚val·yü] (engineering) An index of the ability of a substance or material to retard the flow of heat; higher numerical values correspond to higher insulating ability.

R-value

A unit of thermal resistance. A material’s R-value is a measure of the effectiveness of the material in stopping the flow of heat through it. The higher a material’s Rvalue, the greater its insulating properties and the slower the heat flow through it. Examples of higher R-values for residential buildings: R-50 ceilings, R-21 walls, and R-30 floors.

R-value

A measure of the thermal resistance of a material or component.

R-value

A measure of the heat conductivity of material. The higher the R-value,the better the insulating qualities. The Federal Trade Commission,in something called the R-Value Rule, requires certain disclosures regarding insulation. Among other things, new home sellers must put the following in every sales contract: the type, thickness, and R-value of the insulation that will be installed in each part of the house.Failure to make the required disclosures amounts to a deceptive trade practice and is punishable by fines. For full text of the rule, see 16 CFR 460 available at the Government Printing Office Web site at www.gpo.gov.
