(ro͞ovo͞o`mə), river, c.450 mi (724 km) long, rising in N Mozambique, near Lake Nyasa and flowing E to the Indian Ocean. It forms most of the Tanzania-Mozambique border. In its lower course it is navigable for small craft.Ruvuma
(Rovuma), a river in East Africa that for most of its length forms the border between Tanzania and Mozambique. The Ruvuma is approximately 800 km long and drains an area of 145,000 sq km. It originates in the mountains east of Lake Nyasa and empties into the Indian Ocean. The Lugenda River, a right tributary, is its largest tributary. The Ruvuma is fed by rain; maximum flow occurs at the end of summer, in March and May. Parts of the lower Ruvuma are navigable.
