Baratov, Sulkhan Grigorevich

Baratov, Sulkhan Grigor’evich

Born 1821; died 1866. Georgian historian. Prince of the Baratashvili family. Graduated from the Pavlovskii Korpus (military college, 1841). Served as an officer in the Mingrelian chasseur regiment.

Baratov wrote the compilation History of Georgia from the earliest times to the Mongol conquest (five parts, 1865–71) in Russian. On the whole, his work continued the feudal historiography of Georgia; it was distinguished, however, by the attempt to link events in Georgia with the course of world history. The first three parts of the History were translated into Georgian and published in 1895 and 1913.
