Proculus

Proculus

Dates of birth and death unknown. Roman jurist of the mid-first century A.D., prominent representative of the Proculians, a legal school founded by Labeo.

Proculus and his followers opposed Sabinus and the Sabinians on a number of theoretical and practical issues of jurisprudence. The judgments of Proculus are distinguished by a depth of analysis and an understanding of the requirements of practice. They are known primarily from the works of other Roman jurists. Only a small number of fragments from Proculus’ works were used in the Digest.
