Pepper, George Wharton,

Pepper, George Wharton

(1867–1961) U.S. senator, lawyer; born in Philadelphia, Pa. After practicing, teaching, and writing about the law, he was appointed to the U.S. Senate (Rep., Pa.; 1922–27). He wrote the U.S. Code, a codification of all statutes passed by Congress. Later he would argue several important cases before the Supreme Court involving the constitutionality of New Deal legislation.
