Russo-Spanish Treaty of 1812
Russo-Spanish Treaty of 1812
an alliance against France, signed July 8 (20) in the city of Velikie Luki by Chancellor N. P. Rumiantsev and a representative of the Spanish Cortes, Sea Bermúdez The treaty proclaimed friendship, sincere concord, and alliance between the two countries (art. 1). The parties stated their firm intention to wage a struggle against a common foe—the French emperor (art. 2). Alexander I recognized the legality of the general cortes and extraordinary cortes that had convened in Cádiz and the constitution they had adopted (art. 3). Commercial relations were restored between the countries. A consequence of the treaty was the coordination of the two countries’ military efforts against Napoleon, which somewhat impeded the transfer of Napoleon’s troops to Russia and Central Europe at critical moments in the Patriotic War of 1812 and the campaign of 1813.
