Stans, Maurice Hubert
(môrēs` hyo͞o`bərt stănz), 1908–98, U.S. government official, b. Shakopee, Minn. He worked as an accountant for many years before serving in the Eisenhower administration as deputy postmaster general (1955–57), deputy budget director (1957–58), and director of the budget (1958–61). Stans later became (1969) secretary of commerce under President Richard M. Nixon, but resigned (1971) to work as finance chairman for Nixon's reelection campaign. Thought to have been involved in the Watergate affairWatergate affair,in U.S. history, series of scandals involving the administration of President Richard M. Nixon; more specifically, the burglarizing of the Democratic party national headquarters in the Watergate apartment complex in Washington, D.C.
