释义 | Tilghman, WilliamTilghman, William(1756–1827) jurist; born in Talbot County, Md. A Loyalist, he sat out the Revolutionary War reading law at his family's estate in Maryland. Member of the Maryland assembly (1788–90) and senate (1791), he moved to Philadelphia to practice law (1795). He was on Pennsylvania's court of appeals (1805), then chief justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court (1806–27). Trustee of the University of Pennsylvania (1802–27) and president of the American Philosophical Society (1824–27), he is credited with trying to apply more objective equity to Pennsylvania law.Tilghman, William (Matthew)(1854–1924) lawman; born in Fort Dodge, Iowa. An outstanding lawman in Kansas and Oklahoma (1877–1914), he also supervised the production of a motion picture, The Passing of the Oklahoma Outlaws. He came out of retirement during the Prohibition period and was killed in Cromwell, Okla. |
