Tamozhennye Knigi

(customs-house books), in Russia, systematic records of incomes and expenditures kept by customs houses from the 16th to the mid-18th century.

The tamozhennye knigi included descriptions and valuations of examined goods, merchants’ payments of duties at local markets, levies for the transport of goods, and the disbursement for official purposes of the money taken in. After internal customs houses were abolished in 1754, such records were no longer kept. Tamozhennye knigi are an extremely valuable source in the study of Russia’s socioeconomic development in the 17th and 18th centuries.
