Stanislawski, Jan Grzegorz

Born June 12 (24), 1860, in the village of Olshana in present-day Cherkassy Oblast, Ukrainian SSR; died Jan. 6, 1907, in Kraków. Polish landscape painter, strongly influenced by the aesthetics of Mloda Polska.

Stanislawski studied in Warsaw under W. Gerson, at the School of Fine Arts in Kraków under W. Luszczkiewicz (1883–85), and in Paris (1885–88), where he lived until 1895. In 1897 he became a professor at the Kraków Academy of Arts. Stanislawski made frequent visits to the Ukraine. In Stanislawski’s paintings impressionist principles blend with the traditions of 19th-century Polish painting. Simple in their motifs, his paintings are full of space, light, air, and the radiance of pure colors. Among his best works are A Barn in the Ukraine (after 1900) and Windmills (c. 1904), both exhibited in the Kraków National Museum.
